“Chi si immagina le isole del Pacifico solo come un inanellarsi di isole coralline, spiagge mozzafiato e mari diafani dovrebbe ricredersi. Figi, Isole Salomone e Molucche nel 2000 sono state oggetto di colpi di Stato oggi dimenticati. E cosa dire di Bali due anni dopo? Forse nella memoria collettiva abitano ricordi di massacri nelle Filippine e a Timor Est , seppure fatichiamo a collocarle sulla cartina. Poi Kosovo, Colombia, Nepal, Chiapas. Gli occhi della guerra si chiudono facilmente. Non così per chi l’ha vissuta. Capita a Marco Lupis che in Il Male Inutile, dal Kosovo a Timor Est, dal Chiapas a Bali le testimonianze di un reporter di guerra (Rubbettino, pagine 248, euro 16,00) ripercorre ore tragiche e dolorose per mostrare anche come “la guerra per un inviato sia il momento in cui tutto diventa chiaro. Ed estremo: rapporti umani, compassione, bene e male, malvagità, dolore. E nessun giornalista può esimersi dal raccontarli”

Who imagines the Pacific islands just as a ringing of coral islands, breathtaking beaches and diaphanous seas should change his mind. Fiji, Solomon Islands and Moluccas in 2000 were the subject of coups d’état now forgotten. And what about Bali two years later? Perhaps memories of massacres in the Philippines and in East Timor live in the collective memory, even if we struggle to place them on the map. Then Kosovo, Colombia, Nepal, Chiapas. The eyes of war close easily. Not so for those who have lived it. It happens to Marco Lupis that in Evil Evil, from Kosovo to East Timor, from Chiapas to Bali the testimonies of a war reporter (Rubbettino, pages 248, euro 16.00) retraces tragic and painful hours to show also “the war for an envoy it is the moment when everything becomes clear. And extreme: human relationships, compassion, good and evil, evil, pain. And no journalist worthy of this title can call him or herself out, turning their heads away instead of reporting on all this”
